A quick scan through our site, and it’s easy to see that nearly 75% of our designs are sold out. It’s frustrating, we know, but we can explain.
Being a modern startup in a traditional industry is no easy feat, but sometimes it’s even harder than we plan for. The jewelry industry is stuck in a bygone era, and a quick trip through LA’s jewelry district shows as much. Men exchanging bags on the sidewalk, endless rows of generic designs, and local jewelers pushing hard sales behind glass booths. We’re not keen on the hard sale or generic designs, but we are interested in the talented folks who have been skillfully crafting this jewelry for decades. It’s because of their skill that we’re proud to work with local manufacturers who have more than 30+ years in their family businesses. We ask a lot of our extended jewelry making family, and they too are trying to modernize a tedious and time-consuming trade.
Problem 1: Quality takes time.
Each one of our pieces takes at least three weeks to make from start to finish – from smelting, to casting, to soldering, to polishing, and finally cleaning – it’s a labor intensive process, and that’s just on the manufacturing side. Once we pick up the pieces, our team quality controls each one with a loop in our downtown studio before adding it to our online inventory. In short, it’s a total of four to five weeks before our inventory hits the shelves (or in our case, the site).
Problem 2: We underestimated demand.
We’re so grateful to have experienced tremendous growth in the past few months (thank-you, thank-you!), but if we’ve learned one thing: more money, more problems. For context, we sent out 722 orders in June 16’ and a whopping 1,312 orders in August 16’ (more than our entire holiday season last year). With this type of growth it’s hard for us to predict what our sales will look like next month, especially as we head into this year’s holiday season.
We’re adapting, our manufacturers are adapting, and we’re all trying our best to keep up with a demand well beyond what we could have imagined.
So we thank you, without whom this wouldn’t be possible, for your patience and support as we navigate through these growing pains. Every new company feels them, right? For now, we’re hoping to have most of your favorites restocked in the next few weeks, as well as an exciting new piece launching, and a sneak peek at our Black Friday exclusive. As always, thank-you for spreading the word and staying patient — we love every tag, mention, snap, and email we receive.
As an extended thank you (because sometimes an apology just isn’t enough), we’d like to offer free shipping through the end of September. Use code SOLDOUTSEPT at check out for free domestic shipping on all orders.
