The Break Down: Cleaning Your Jewelry

The Break Down: Cleaning Your Jewelry

Posted by Vrai Oro on

While solid gold doesn’t tarnish or fade, it does need a little pick-me-up from time to time. Wearing your Vrai & Oro pieces everyday—as intended—can lend its way to dirt accumulation, which is never pretty. Today, we’re sharing three natural ways to clean your jewelry so you can keep your jewelry looking as new as the day you got it. We’ve tested these methods on gold and diamonds, but we’d double check before using them on other precious gems or natural stones, like pearls. Each method listed takes about 15 minutes at the most, and uses items that you probably have laying around the house. They are as follows.

Cleaning Your Jewelry, easy

1. Dish Soap and Water—Light Wash

Ingredients:
1 tsp of dishwashing soap
1 cup of warm water
Bowl or shallow dish

Steps:
Mix dish soap into a cup of warm water until fully dissolved. Dip jewelry in solution and use a soft cloth (or soft bristle toothbrush) to gently scrub clean. Rinse with clean water and lay to dry on a paper towel or clean, soft cloth.

Medium Clean

2. Essential Oil Mix—A Medium Clean

Ingredients:
3 drops of lemon essential oil
½ cup witch hazel or white vinegar
Small bowl or shallow dish

Steps:
Mix EO with witch hazel or vinegar in a small bowl. Add jewelry and soak for approx 5 minutes. If needed, wipe with a soft cloth to loosen dirt. Rinse with water and lay to dry on a paper towel or clean, soft cloth.

Heavy Duty Jewelry Cleaning

3. Foil, Baking Soda, and Vinegar Method—Heavy Duty

Ingredients:
1 cup warm-hot water
1 TBSP salt
1 TBSP baking soda
½ cup white vinegar
Aluminum foil
Bowl or shallow dish

Steps:
Line bowl or shallow dish with aluminum foil. Add jewelry. Mix 1 cup of boiling water, 1 tablespoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of baking soda together and pour into your jewelry filled, foil lined pan. Slowly add ½ cup white vinegar—similar to chemistry class! Watch as the baking soda and vinegar react and bubble up—this is when most of the cleaning happens. Allow jewelry to soak for 5-10 minutes, stirring once or twice to move jewelry around if need be. Rinse jewelry and lay to dry on a paper towel or soft cloth.
