Around Town: Manuela, Arts District

Around Town: Manuela, Arts District

Posted by Alyssa Julian on

Tucked into the expansive courtyard of the prestigious Hauser, Wirth, & Schimmel gallery sits Manuela, the latest addition to the Arts District’s ever-changing landscape of restaurants. Welcoming and open, the unique details of Manuela’s interiors are all sourced from dilapidated arts district warehouses that surround the flour mill-turned-sprawling gallery. It has quickly and rightfully earned itself the title of hottest new restaurant in town, a title we can attest to. Beyond being paired with a world renowned gallery space, Manuela’s menu artfully masters obsession with quality–keeping all dishes simple in name, yet complex in flavor. Wes Whitsell,  head chef and co-owner (he shares ownership with the gallery owners, of which Manuela is named after), favors locally sourced ingredients, often changing the restaurants menu to reflect what’s available seasonally.

While the interiors are more than enough to marvel at on their own, the real takeaway from Manuela’s experience is the food. Whitsell’s menu seamlessly fuses his rural Texas roots with impressively fresh California produce we all know and love. Step into the community garden across the courtyard and you’ll know exactly where most of the dishes herbs, eggs, and garnish comes from–about 250 ft away (without coincidence). Whitsell prioritizes fresh and local ingredients, something he says is most likely a result of growing up in the Texan countryside. Hints of his Southern upbringing are dotted throughout the menu: offerings of smoked meats, pickled vegetables, and game options not typically offered at most Southern California restaurants find themselves permanent fixtures on the Manuela menu.

We could recount our entire Manuela experience for you (of which there are many), but we suggest trying it out for yourself. Both restaurant and gallery are open Wednesday through Sunday; Manuela for lunch and dinner in the week, earlier for brunch on the weekend. Visit them at 907 E 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90013.
