Around Town: DTLA Favorites

Around Town: DTLA Favorites

Posted by Vrai Oro on

Downtown’s ever changing landscape is something we’ve grown quite fond of over the last three years—after all, it’s been our only home (and a good one, at that). We decided to round up our favorite spots across this special section of the city and share them with you. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Aesop DTLA

Aesop

Our favorite birthday, anniversary, or “just because” gift shop—we all love Aesop unconditionally. While their offering of exceptionally made, plant-based products is enough to keep us coming back, Aesop’s interiors are something else to marvel at entirely. Designed by Brooks + Scarpa, the whole of the store’s display is constructed from 6 inch cardboard tubes, inspired by the multitude of fabric bolts seen around the fashion district.

Blue Bottle Coffee, Bradbury Building DTLA

Blue Bottle

This Blue Bottle location is the most recent addition to the DTLA coffee scene. Situated in the downstairs corner unit of the historic (and nearby) Bradbury building, Blue Bottle is a light and airy oasis in the middle of hectic DTLA. We usually stop by after a walk through Grand Central Market.

The Broad Museum, DTLA

The Broad

Where do we even begin? The 120,000 sq foot building, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro houses an impressive contemporary art collection. Admission is free, the exhibits are always on rotation, and it is easily one of the more inspiring places to stop by in Downtown LA. Whether admiring the sleek honeycomb structure from the street or absorbing the energy from Basquiat inside, the Broad is sure to impress.

Eastern Columbia Building, DTLA

The Eastern Columbia Building

Designed by Claud Beelman and opened in 1930, the Eastern Building is one of LA’s more recognizable architectural gems (officially a world history site since 1985). Now home to businesses and residences alike, the turquoise facade is a nice pop amongst a mostly neutral LA skyline. We recommend stopping across the street and admiring its intricate structure before heading over to the Ace Hotel for an afternoon cocktail.

Formerly Yes, DTLA

Formerly Yes

The most design-forward, essentials only shop we know of in Los Angeles, Formerly Yes sells thoughtful, minimal home and office wares. Owners Brad and Jenna are friendly, knowledgeable, and have the cutest shop dog, Ernest, who will run over to say hi upon entering the store.
